Why Diet Quality Matters More Than Calories for Fertility
Focussing on the quality of diet over just calories is crucial for fertility can be powerful—especially in a world where calorie-counting often overshadows nutrient density. Whilst there can be benefits to things like fasting and calorie restriction for those that are overweight, have insulin resistance PCOS or have ovulatory issues related to insulin and blood sugar dysregulation, but typically I see (mostly women) restricting foods based on their calories and this isn’t often in favour for optimising fertility. Here are some reasons why nutrients are more important than numbers.
Fertility is Nutrient-Dependent, Not Calorie-Dependent
Fertility relies on specific nutrients—like folate, zinc, selenium, omega-3s, and antioxidants—that support hormone balance, egg and sperm quality, implantation, and early pregnancy development. You can hit your calorie "target" with processed foods and still be missing these critical nutrients.Calorie-Focused Eating Can Miss the Bigger Picture
Eating a low-calorie or restrictive diet might result in weight loss, but it can disrupt hormone balance, impair ovulation, or even suppress the menstrual cycle—especially if fats and proteins (crucial for hormone production) are inadequate.Nutrient-Dense Foods Act Like Fertility Fuel
High-quality foods like leafy greens, oily fish, berries, nuts, legumes, and whole grains reduce inflammation, support gut health, and protect reproductive cells from oxidative stress—key factors in improving both egg and sperm quality.Stable Blood Sugar > Just Fewer Calories
Fertility thrives on hormonal stability. Highly processed, calorie-light diets (e.g., low-fat yogurts, meal bars) often spike blood sugar and insulin, which can disrupt ovulation and testosterone balance. A nutrient-rich diet helps keep blood sugar steady—essential for PCOS, endometriosis, and male fertility. The Body Needs to Feel Safe to Reproduce
A nutrient-rich diet sends the body a signal of abundance and safety. Calorie restriction, especially if it leads to nutrient depletion or stress, can signal the opposite: that it's not a safe time to conceive.
"Calories might give your body energy, but quality foods give it the information it needs to reproduce. Fertility is built on nutrients, not numbers."
THE CALORIE MYTH: WHY “LESS” DOESN’T WORK
Restricting calories (especially in the morning) tells your body it’s not safe to reproduce.
Fertility thrives when your body feels safe, fed, and balanced—not when it’s running on stress hormones and caffeine.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD: NOURISH, DON’T DEPRIVE
You will never really see me giving strict meal plans but I do like to give guidance that is flexible to support fertility friendly eating. Here are daily goals that I give to most of my clients:
30g of protein at breakfast
Healthy fats to support hormone production
Slow carbs + fibre to fuel your brain and stabilize blood sugar
Real food nutrients, not just macros, think colour!
GENTLE REFRAME FOR THE CALORIE-FOCUSED MIND
We have been trained for so many years to think eat less move more. This isn’t a sustainable way to live (in my opinion). We aren’t meant to number crunch our meals and add it to a little app to validate we are doing OK (hello shit self-esteem), and you know the app I’m talking about don’t you!
Instead of: "How little can I eat?"
Try: "How well can I fuel my hormones today?"Instead of: “Low-fat/low-cal”
Try: “Nutrient-rich and cycle-supportive”
I like to empower my clients with what food does for our bodies. Our bodies thrive on nutrients not numbers.
